Am Jakobstor

Przybramna

History

Am Jakobstor (At St. James Gate) is a street that came into existence after the demolition of the city ramparts. Until 1904, it comprised the stretch from Hansaplatz to Schüsseldamm. The section from Hansaplatz to Pfefferstadt (Pepper Town) was only incorporated in that year; until then it bore the name "Karrengasse" (Cart Lane). In the land register of 1624, it was also counted as part of Kalkgasse (Lime Lane).

In 1898, the properties between Hansaplatz and Schüsseldamm were assigned to Jakobsneugasse. Then, between 1898 and 1903, this section was called "Jakobstorgasse" (St. James Gate Lane). From 1904 it finally received the name Am Jakobstor. In the same year, the stretch between Hansaplatz and Pfefferstadt, previously called Karrengasse, was also incorporated into this street.

After the war, the street continued under the name ul. Przybramna (At the Gate). Between 1960 and 1966, the eastern part of the lane was merged with Wallgasse (ul. Walowa, meaning Rampart Lane). The western part was converted into a parking lot with access from Paradiesgasse (Rajska).
