Bischofsberg

Biskupia

History

As a street name, the designation "Bischofsberg" ("Bishop's Hill") has been in use for the properties in question -- previously counted as part of Schwarzes Meer -- only since 1854. The Bischofsberg hill itself belonged to the Bishop of Kuyavia as early as the 14th century, which is the origin of the name.

Originally, this lane was part of Schwarzes Meer ("Black Sea," a street name). In 1884, it was first separated as "Große Berggasse" (Large Mountain Lane) and was renamed Bischofsberg between 1920 and 1937, owing to its location directly on the hill of the same name.
