Boltengang

Sandomierska

History

Originally a small sunken lane running north-south, between the Stadtgebiet and the Eastern Railway tracks. Between 1908 and 1940, the name was transferred to the part of Boltengasse between the Eastern Railway tracks and the Neuer Weg (marked green on the map below). The original Boltengang has since belonged to Boltengasse. The name originated in the 18th century from the Boltenbleiche, a bleaching ground "between Hauptgraben, Küperdamm, and Faulgraben" owned by Marten Bolte. Since the end of the war, together with the Neuer Weg and Boltengasse, it forms part of ulica Sandomierska, named after the Polish city of Sandomierz.
