Drehergasse

Tokarska

History

In 1357 the lane existed as "platea circa Mutlavam" (lane by the Mottlau), and in 1382 as "platea circa aquam" (lane by the water). In 1415 the name "Dreyergasse" or "Kistenmachergasse" (Crate Makers' Lane) first appeared, though the latter designation did not survive. From the mid-15th century onward, the usual spelling was "Dregergasse." Since porters and crate makers predominantly lived in the lane as early as 1357, there can be no doubt about the meaning of the name: it derives from "Dräger" (porter). The 1415 spelling "Dreyergasse" merely reflects the softened pronunciation of the "g." In 1633, the current corrupted form "Drehergasse" (Turners' Lane) appeared for the first time.
