Große Gerbergasse

Garbary

History

Already in 1357 it is mentioned as "platea cerdonum" (Street of the Tanners) in its present extent. It has only been called Große Gerbergasse (Great Tanners' Lane) since the end of the 18th century, when the prefix was added to distinguish it from the then-emerging name Kleine Gerbergasse (Small Tanners' Lane). Even today it is still called Tanners' Lane in translation.
