Karmelitergasse

Karmelicka

History

After the demolition of the fortification walls, a new passage was created from Weissmönchenhintergasse to the city moat. Since 1900, it has borne the name Karmelitergasse (Carmelite Lane), after the former White Friars' or Carmelite monastery.

The Carmelites -- also known as White Friars -- were a mendicant order that came to Europe from the Holy Land in the 13th century. The present-day Polish name also translates to "Carmelite Lane."
