Karpfenseigen

Karpia

History

During the time of the Teutonic Order, the area belonged to the undeveloped foreground of the castle. From the 17th century onward, after the mouth of the Radaune Canal had been relocated here, the resulting waterfront street was regularly called "An der Radaune" (On the Radaune). Only from about 1840 did the name Karpfenseigen come into use instead.

The name derives from the Seigen -- fish traps or holding baskets -- in which fish were kept fresh in the Radaune Canal. Whether these were exclusively carp cannot be verified. The present-day Polish name translates to "Carp Lane."
