Karrenwall

Okopowa

History

A newly laid-out street on the site of a former rampart, named in 1903 after the Bastion Karren that once stood here. The bastion had been built in the 17th century on the site of the earlier Karrmacher- or Karrentor (Cart Gate or Cartmakers' Gate), which stood at the exit of the suburban moat and was constructed in 1462.

The name thus goes back to the Cart Gate, which once marked the passage for carts and their makers. After the war, the streets Karrenwall and Wiebenwall were merged into ul. Okopowa (roughly "Trench Street").
