Kasernengasse
Koszarowa
History
Around 1650, the section of the lane from Reitergasse to the bend at Weidengasse was called "Winkelgasse" (Corner Lane); the remaining stretch was occupied by a water ditch.
In the 18th century, the entire lane -- together with a section of Langgarter Hintergasse and Husarengasse -- bore the name "Stinkgang" (Stink Alley). Later it was distinguished as "Grosser Stinkgang" (Great Stink Alley) from the Husarengasse, which became known as the "Kleiner Stinkgang" (Little Stink Alley).
After the construction of the cavalry barracks, the name was changed to Kasernengasse (Barracks Lane) around 1870. After the war, the lane was renamed ul. Koszarowa -- a correct Polish translation of the German name -- before disappearing entirely in the 1950s during redevelopment.
