Kohlentor

n. e.

History

The wall of the Teutonic Order's castle running from Ritterstraße to the Swan Tower apparently had only one gate, located at the end of Ritterstraße, which led to the Mottlau. The Kohlentor (Coal Gate), like the Rähmtor, was probably a later opening; it existed by the mid-17th century. The name Kohlentor as a lane designation has been in use on plans only since 1845.

This lane is located at the very spot where the Kohlentor once stood in the castle wall. After the war the street still existed for some time under the name translated into Polish, ul. Węglowa Brama, before disappearing in the course of the area's redevelopment.
