Malergasse
Malarska
History
In 1581, the land register calls the lane "gemahlete Gasse" (painted lane); later it was consistently known as Malergasse (Painters' Lane). It appears, therefore, that the name originally referred to the colorful paintwork on the houses.
However, a connection to the milling or brewing trade - perhaps to malt preparation - is also not ruled out as a possible origin of the name. In the land register of 1400, the lane was still recorded without a name.
