Matzkauschegasse

Ławnicza

History

In the 14th century, the lane appears from 1357 as a cross street off the Langgasse without a name of its own. In 1415 it is first recorded as "Matczkowsche Gasse." The name derives from the respected burgher family Matzkau, whose members are mentioned in the citizens' register, in ground-rent deeds, and as members of the lay judges' college (Schöffenkollegium) in the 14th and 15th centuries.

The family had their properties here. Since the war, the street bears a Polish name that translates as Aldermen's Lane (ul. Ławnicza).
