Mauergang

Podmurze

History

The Mauergang (Wall Passage) was originally part of the narrow Hintergasse (Back Lane) that ran along the Main Town's city wall. Since the section that now forms the Mauergang was already blocked off at the tower "Kick in die Kock" (a watchtower with a colorful name meaning roughly "Peek into the Kitchen") by the 18th century and formed a dead end, it was called Kehrwiedergasse (Turn-Back Lane) in 1796 - a name reflecting the necessity of turning around.

By 1805, the chronicler Wutstrack already referred to it as "Mauergang, formerly Hintergasse." The designation Kehrwiedergasse appears only once in the historical sources.

Since the war, the street bears a Polish name that translates as "Before the Wall."
