Pestilenzgasse

n. e.

History

Originally named after the plague houses in this area — bei den Pestilenzhäusern (at the plague houses). At the beginning of the 19th century, as the area became more densely built up, the street was called Pestilenzgasse. In 1877, the first two syllables were removed from this name, and the unpleasant name was transformed into the cheerful Lenzgasse (Spring Lane). At times, the southern side of the Groddeckgasse was also counted as part of the (Pesti)lenzgasse. After the war, it still bore the name ul. Wiosenna for some time, although only a single house had survived the war. At the end of the 1940s, this house too fell victim to the pickaxe — space was needed to expand the tram depot.
