Pfeffergasse
Korzenna
History
Already mentioned as Pfeffergasse in 1399, regularly recorded as Pfefferstadt from 1581. The section of Pfefferstadt that bordered the Corpus Christi Bastion was called Ziezausche or Ziessausche Gasse in the 18th century. This name, derived from a personal name, only went out of use around 1900. The bridge over the Radaune Canal at the opposite end of Pfefferstadt was called Brotbrücke (Bread Bridge) in 1480. The name probably comes from the pepper stored here. However, this should not be understood as pepper in the modern sense of the word, but rather as Turkish pepper or paprika. The price ratios to other goods known from the sources rule out Indian pepper as the namesake. Today its name translates as Spice Lane.
