Schichaugasse
Jana z Kolna
History
Originally, the lane formed the continuation of the Neue Damm, laid out in 1402 to connect the Altstadt with the Jungstadt – today's Schüsseldamm. In the 17th century, it was occasionally called Kuhgasse, but was usually known as "behind the Pockenhaus" (smallpox house) or "behind the Lazarett" (hospital). In 1899, the latter designation was changed to Schichaugasse, after Ferdinand Schichau, the builder and owner of the adjacent Schichau shipyard. After the war, the street was named after Johannes Scolvus (1435–1484), in the Polish spelling of this name.
