St. Trinitatis - Kirchengasse

Św. Trójcy

History

The oldest record of this lane comes from an entry in the land register of 1643, where it is called "ex opposito templi" (opposite the church). In an approximately contemporaneous city map, however, it is called Antonisgasse, and this was probably its name in common usage as well. Due to its location, toward the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century it was called Kirchengasse (Church Lane), bei Graumönchen (from the gray color of the Franciscan friars' habits), or Graumönchen-Kirchengasse. The name St. Trinitatis-Kirchengasse appears from 1805 in Wutstrack, parallel to the above names. The older designation Tönniesgasse auf der Tromme was known to Wutstrack only by name, for a passage located near the Fleischergasse. The addition "auf der Tromme" points to a drainage ditch in this passage. Kirchengasse was also temporarily used for the later Pumpengang.
