Stützengasse

History
Like Mausegasse and Kiebitzgasse, Stützengasse was apparently not built up until after 1440, since it too was entered in the land register compiled around that time without a name, merely as "twergasse" (cross lane), added by a later hand. As late as 1643 it was listed only by number as "arta platea VI." The designation "platea VI" derives from the fact that the streets on the Speicherinsel (Granary Island) were initially numbered, once from the north toward Milchkannengasse and a second time starting at Milchkannengasse heading south. Thus the lane was simply called Sixth Street. The present name appears on maps from 1792 onward. What it derives from is not known. Wutstrack in 1805 also calls the lane "Stützen- oder Schützengasse."
