Thornscherweg

Toruńska

History

Around 1650 the two sections of the lane were called First and Second Brückengasse (Bridge Lane). By 1763 it was already called Thornischer Weg; the Schrötter city map of around 1800 occasionally also refers to it as Thornische Gasse. The name likewise derives from the adjacent Thornsche Brücke, where Vistula barges from Thorn moored. A granary called "Weichselkahn" (Vistula Barge) was already located just above the bridge in the 17th century. Originally only the part between Lastadie and Poggenpfuhl was built up on one side and traversed by a covered drainage canal (hence called "uff der Trumme"); the part between Poggenpfuhl and the Mottlau formed a nameless fire lane separating Mastenfeld and Dielenmarkt. The section between Aschbrücke and Thornsche Brücke was called Brückengasse from 1643, then Thornsche Brückengasse from 1805. The lane is also listed on some maps as Thornscher Weg. After the war it was extended to the northwest beyond Fleischergasse to Wiebenwall, as a traffic axis for the Lower Town and the Suburb.
