Trippenmachergasse
Szewska
History
Trippen were wooden raised overshoes that were simply indispensable in the unpaved lanes of the 16th century. In later times they were made from lighter cork. Since this cork product could also be regarded as slippers, the lane was called Korkenmacher- oder Pantoffelmachergasse (Cork Maker or Slipper Maker Lane) in 1805. Today it is quite prosaically called, in translation, Shoemaker Lane.
