Turmgasse
Basztowa
History
In the land register of 1643, the lane is listed only as "arta platea prima." The designation "platea prima" derives from the fact that the streets on the Speicherinsel (Granary Island) were initially numbered, once from the north toward Milchkannengasse and a second time starting at Milchkannengasse heading south. Thus the lane was simply called Erste Straße (First Street). Although the Turmspeicher (Tower Granary), after which the lane was later named, was already located here in 1643, it initially kept the name Erste Straße. After the war the lane was still called ul. Basztowa (Tower Lane) for some years; after the ruins there were demolished, the lane itself also disappeared.
