Ziegengasse

Kozia

History

The lane is mentioned in 1357 as "twergasse ante ecclesiam" (cross-lane before the church), and already by 1382 as "platea caprarum" (Goat Street). The name then remains consistently recorded as "czegengasse."

Like Ochsengasse (Ox Lane) and Kuhgasse (Cow Lane), the name derives from stables for small livestock that were apparently still present at the end of the 15th century.

In 1470, Lubbe notes in his family chronicle, when mentioning a godparenthood he had undertaken for a foundling: "And the child was found in the Ziegengasse by the swine." This passage confirms that the lane still had a rural character at that time, with various farm animals being kept there.
