Zimmergasse

n. e.

History

The designation "andere" means simply "the second" in Middle Low German. The arta platea II is the same in Latin, and comes from the fact that originally the streets on the Speicherinsel (Granary Island) were numbered, once from the north toward the Milchkannengasse, and a second time starting at the Milchkannengasse heading south. The name Schleifengasse appears from the end of the 18th century, Zimmergasse from 1805. Both these names derive from the inclined planes located here, which served to drag timber logs out of the water in order to process them in the municipal timber yard (Stadtzimmerhof) that was formerly located here. In a city map from 1945 this lane is recorded as ul. Podcienie (Arcade Lane). From 1946 for some years ul. Ciesielska (Carpenters' Lane), before it disappeared entirely around 1950.
