Große Bäckergasse

Piekary

History

Until the end of the 18th century, this street had no name of its own and was considered part of the Eimermacherhof (bucket-maker court), a designation that encompassed the entire quarter formed by the Grosse Backergasse, Grosse and Kleine Gasse, Schmiedegasse, and the street still called Eimermacherhof today.

Only between 1800 and 1817 did the name Grosse Backergasse (Large Baker Street) emerge for this street.

After the Second World War, the lane continued to exist for some years under the Polish name "Piekary" -- a term used in medieval Poland for service settlements whose obligatory labor consisted of baking bread. After the wartime ruins were cleared away, the lane disappeared entirely.
