Hansagasse

Kupiecka

History

Hansagasse was created after the demolition of the city ramparts, from part of the street Am Olivaer Tor (At the Oliva Gate) and newly gained land. Until 1909, it was called "Am Lazarett" (At the Hospital) after the neighboring city hospital. The 1918 residents' directory gives the name form "Hinterm Lazarett" (Behind the Hospital). It was then renamed Hansagasse, after the Hanseatic League.

After World War II, the street was renamed ul. Kupiecka (Merchants' Lane). Following the demolition of the ruins still standing there, the street was initially abolished entirely. However, around the mid-1960s, an office complex was built here, and its two buildings bear the address ul. Kupiecka. The old street pavement is still present and clearly visible to this day.
