Mottlaugasse

Dolna Brama

History

The properties belonging to Mottlaugasse were recorded in the 18th century inheritance register together with today's Holzschneidegasse, Wallplatz, and Steinschleuse under the general designation "before the New Gate." The New Gate was located at the exit of Fleischergasse, before the bastion fortifications were built. This designation encompassed the entire area, including the later Holzschneidergasse, Mottlauer Gasse, Wallplatz, An der Steinschleuse, and Am Leegen Tor.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the lane appears on maps as "Am Leegen Tor." Only from 1854 was the name restricted to its later area of application, in the form "Motlauer Gasse." By 1908 it was already called Mottlaugasse. Before 1937 it was renamed "Am Leeger Tor." Since the war it bears the Polish name Dolna Brama, meaning "Lower Gate."
