Schäferei

Owczarnia

History

During the Teutonic Order period, warehouses and storage yards of the Order's steward were located here and on the opposite Bleihofinsel, where the commercial facilities serving trade operations were situated. The older spelling of the word was accordingly "Schefferei." After the war, the street was called Owczarnia (sheepfold, in the sense of sheep breeding) for a few years, but the present-day name is a correct translation of the original name.
