Silberhütte

History
The name Silberhütte (Silver Smelter) was given to the newly laid-out street from the Holzmarkt (Timber Market) to Neugarten after the demolition of the city ramparts. It refers to the silver-processing facility belonging to the goldsmiths' guild, used for melting, separating, and refining silver, which stood as early as 1608 at the point where the Radaune river entered the Old Town through the fortifications.
From 1767, the Silberhütte could only be used under public supervision. In 1805 it still existed but was seldom used, as the goldsmiths preferred the smelting works at the Fischertor (Fisher's Gate), where the sworn smelter resided. The facility remained in operation until at least 1805.
