Weißmönchen-Hintergasse

Podbielańska

History

The lane is first mentioned in 1355 in a charter concerning the establishment of a copper hammer mill, as "weg do man geit czu sinte Jorian" (the way one goes to St. George's). Similarly, in 1399, a charter granting the Old Town's lime kiln describes its location as being "at the end of St. George's Lane and Pfeffergasse toward the Jungstadt" (Young Town).

After the White Monks -- that is, Carmelites -- who had previously been based in the Jungstadt moved into the Old Town's St. George's Hospital in 1464, the lane was named after them. In the hereditary registers of the 16th and 17th centuries, it appears in the abbreviated form "Hintergasse" (Back Lane). As late as 1523, it was still counted, together with Weißmönchen-Kirchengasse, among the "Verlorene Gassen" (Lost Lanes).

The present-day numbers 1 and 2 bore the designation "Bärenwinkel" (Bear's Corner) in 1796.
