Winterplatz

Targ Maślany

History

Until the 17th century, this square was counted as part of the Lastadie. Around 1650, the so-called butter market was established here, where not only butter but also other foodstuffs were sold. By the beginning of the 19th century, the square served only as a pottery market. In 1897 it was named Winterplatz in honor of Lord Mayor Leopold von Winter, who had rendered great services to Danzig.

After the war, the Polish renaming commission apparently allowed itself a little joke with this square: instead of giving it a new name, they simply translated the word "Winter" and called it Plac Zimowy. Only in the 1990s did the square receive back its original name, translated into Polish.
